Why I Built Team Chords

A personal story about the frustrating manual workflow of preparing chord sheets for a worship team, and how that experience led to building Team Chords.

Why I Built Team Chords

I built Team Chords because preparing music for a group was far more time-consuming than it should have been.

I am part of a worship team, and for years I was the one responsible for creating chord sheets for the entire group. Since I can quickly identify pitches and chords by ear, the task naturally fell to me.

But over time, I realized this problem was not unique to worship teams.

Many bands, acoustic groups, session musicians, school organizations, and live performers deal with the exact same workflow problems:

  • Songs changing keys during rehearsals

  • Multiple versions of the same song

  • Chord sheets scattered across devices

  • Endless PDF exports and reprints

  • Last-minute adjustments before performances

  • Dependence on one person managing everything

Before Team Chords existed, our workflow looked like this:

  1. Wait for the line-up or set list to be finalized

  2. Listen to each song one by one

  3. Open ChordPro

  4. Create chord sheets while listening

  5. Export every chord sheet as a PDF

  6. Merge all PDFs together using PDFSam Basic

  7. Send the combined PDF to the group

  8. Have someone print copies for everyone

It worked — but it was exhausting.

One of the biggest problems happened during rehearsals. Sometimes a vocalist or musician would request a different key for a song. The moment the key changed, the entire process had to be repeated:

  1. Edit the chord sheet

  2. Re-export the PDF

  3. Recombine the files

  4. Re-send the updated copy

  5. Reprint everything again

Even small changes became frustrating because our rehearsal area was on the first floor while the printer was on the third floor. Simple adjustments turned into repeated trips up and down the building.

Another issue was portability. My entire workflow depended on my laptop. ChordPro and all my supporting tools were installed there. If the laptop got lost, damaged, or stopped working, rebuilding the setup on another machine would take time and effort.

That experience became the foundation of Team Chords.

  • I wanted a system that would:

  • Make chord sheets instantly accessible

  • Allow key changes without rebuilding PDFs

  • Eliminate repetitive manual work

Reduce dependency on a single device

Help musicians collaborate more easily

Make rehearsals smoother and less stressful

Team Chords was built from real-world musician problems — not theoretical ones.

It was created by someone who has experienced the pressure of last-minute key changes, rushed rehearsals, printer problems, and the constant effort of preparing chord sheets week after week.

Whether you are part of a worship team, a cover band, an acoustic duo, a school band, or a live performance group, the goal of Team Chords is the same:

To help musicians spend less time managing files and more time making music together.
